Summer Skincare for Face Masks

We all know face masks aren’t going anywhere despite the summer weather ramping up. But the combination of heat plus protective coverage can wreak havoc on your skin, causing higher incidents of breakouts, inflammation, irritation, rashes and clogged pores. Especially if you have sensitive skin—like me—keeping up with your daily skin care routine is critical for clear, healthy skin in the coming months.

Potential damage—Face masks are helpful in preventing the spread of disease. However, our skin—especially on the face—functions best when it can breathe. From contact friction that causes extra irritation and rashes to oil, sweat and dirt build-up, wearing something that covers your face for hours on end can be frustrating. Here’s a simple guide to help mitigate the concern.

Cleanse, cleanse, cleanse

Glycolic acid is your best friend for removing the trapped dirt and oil caused by face masks. If your skin can handle it, cleanse twice a day with a product containing this powerful aid.

SkinCeuticals Purifying Cleanser
Use this refreshing cleanser to rinse away all the grime picked up throughout the day.

Skip makeup under your mask

Try not to contribute to the build up under your mask by adding unnecessary products. No one can see the lower portion of your face anyway, so skip the foundations and powders for optimal clarity.

Moisturize the skin

When you don a facemask, there are numerous touch points: mainly the elastic bands around the ears and upper jaw and the cloth rim around the cheekbones and lower jaw. Eventually, these spots will feel the friction. Minimize redness and potential rashes, by using a clean moisturizer.

This corrective moisturizer is life-changing—it feels good, smells good and helps to nourish the skin while preventing signs of aging.

Use cotton masks

Cotton masks allow for maximum breathability and protection, so there’s no reason to use synthetic fabrics. Enough said. Be sure to clean your masks regularly for maximum benefits in all areas.

Maintain a sunscreen routine

Makeup might be optional but sunscreen still isn’t. Parts of your face will be exposed to the sun even when wearing protection, and it’s important to take care of those areas.

SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50
It’s so important to use an SPF 365 days a year. This product has a universal tint, meaning it works on any skin color. It’s perfect for days you don’t want to wear any makeup—it gives just the right amount of light coverage.

Carry extra cleansing wipes

If you’re prone to oily skin, carry cleansing wipes to give yourself a refresh or two as you go about your day. Use this tool whenever you feel extra humidity building in your mask. Just be sure to wash your hands as much as possible at the same time.

Heal at night

For many, nighttime is a much-needed reprieve from covering the face. Take advantage of these hours by giving your skin a little extra TLC.

SkinCeuticals Renew Overnight Oily
A good moisture at night is absolutely necessary. It’s a great option for anyone with normal to dry skin.
